TEHRAN – The South Iran Fish Farming Research Center is ready to carry out joint projects in fisheries with Kuwait and Iraq, noted an official at the center.

Iranian scientists have succeeded in the alteration of the morphological sex characteristics of Sobeiti, a fish indigenous to southern waters of the nation, he also announced. The accomplishment was made through artificial propagation and hormone therapy measures conducted on the species he said adding, the achievement has paved the way for the production of the fish in the underwater pens as well as in the aquariums.

A fish farming project in the underwater pens located in the Qeshm Island Free Trade Zone is currently carried out by the center and in cooperation with a Norwegian company, Gholamreza Eskandari said adding, some of the fingerlings to be raised in the region are produced by the research center and the rest are imported, the Persian service of Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) reported on Monday.

Commenting on the recent developments in the nation’s shrimp farming, the expert said that given the White Spot Syndrome epidemic in the region, local shrimp farmers have not been very active in this regard in the current year.
